Fishing in the
Iberá Wetlands

Golden dorado, Pira Pitá (river salmon) and boga sport fishing in one of South America's most biodiverse wetlands. Catch & release, specialist guide and private boat within Iberá National Park.

The experience

The Iberá Wetlands: one of South America's great sport fishing destinations

The Iberá Wetlands are home to some of the most important sport fish populations on the continent. The undisputed star is the golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), the most coveted freshwater game fish in Argentina: a fish of extraordinary power, capable of delivering high-intensity surface fights with explosive leaps that make every catch an experience hard to forget.

But Iberá offers much more. The Pira Pitá (Brycon orbignyanus), also known as the river salmon, is another star species of these wetlands. Recognisable by its characteristic reddish tail — "pira pitá" means "red fish" in Guaraní — it is an acrobatic fish with a spectacular fight, highly sought by sport anglers visiting Corrientes. And the boga (Prochilodus lineatus), robust and abundant in the lagoons and channels of the National Park, completes a range of species that makes El Tránsito an ideal base for any type of angler.

From El Tránsito Nature Luxury Lodge, located inside Iberá National Park at the Carambola Portal, we offer the most exclusive way to discover fishing in Iberá: a private boat, a professional guide with deep knowledge of the territory and the all-inclusive service of a luxury nature lodge in the heart of Corrientes. The method is always catch & release — fishing with immediate release and minimum environmental impact — in keeping with El Tránsito's commitment to ecosystem conservation and the work of Rewilding Argentina in the National Park.

The species of Iberá

Golden dorado, Pira Pitá and boga: the three sport fish of the Iberá Wetlands

The Iberá Wetlands offer a diversity of species that few river systems in the world can match. Each presents a different challenge and a distinct fishing profile.

🐟 Golden dorado — Salminus brasiliensis

The king of freshwater sport fishing in Argentina. It fights on the surface with explosive leaps, can exceed 15 kg and reach speeds of up to 30 km/h. Finding it in Iberá, inside a protected ecosystem free from commercial fishing pressure, is an experience without equivalent in the country.

🐟 Pira Pitá — Brycon orbignyanus · River salmon

The Pira Pitá, whose Guaraní name means "red fish", is also known as the river salmon. Recognisable by its bright reddish tail and fins, it is an acrobatic fish with a spectacular fight: it leaps repeatedly during the struggle, making it one of the most thrilling catches in the esteros. Smaller than the dorado, but equally demanding.

🐟 Boga — Prochilodus lineatus

The boga is one of the most abundant and characteristic species of the lagoons and channels of Iberá National Park. Robust and large, it delivers a sustained fight and is ideal for anglers of all levels. Its massive presence in the ecosystem makes it a frequent catch throughout the fishing days.

Target species Golden dorado · Pira Pitá (river salmon) · Boga
Peak season September to March (peak: October – January)
Available methods Bait Cast (equipment included) · Fly Cast (own equipment)
Mandatory method Catch & release · No live bait · Single barbless hook · Minimum environmental impact
Route per day Approx. 16 km through the lagoons and channels of Iberá

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before coming to fish in Iberá

What fish species can be caught in the Iberá Wetlands?

At El Tránsito, three main species are targeted: the golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), the great challenge of freshwater sport fishing in Argentina; the Pira Pitá (Brycon orbignyanus), also known as the river salmon, recognisable by its reddish tail and acrobatic leaps during the fight; and the boga (Prochilodus lineatus), abundant in the lagoons and channels of Iberá National Park. All three are caught under mandatory catch & release, without live bait, using artificial lures only.

Do I need previous fishing experience to join?

No. The guide adapts each day to the angler's level. The activity is designed for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Complete Bait Cast equipment (rod, reel and lures) is included. For Fly Cast, the guides advise on setup (own equipment required).

What is catch & release fishing?

Catch & release means catching the fish and releasing it alive immediately, minimising stress to the animal. No live bait is used — only artificial lures. It is the only method practised at El Tránsito and is mandatory within the Carambola Portal of Iberá National Park.

What is the best time of year to fish for golden dorado in Iberá?

The peak season for golden dorado fishing in Iberá runs from September to March. The months of highest dorado activity are October, November and December, when the water reaches the temperatures that activate their predatory behaviour. Outside the season, fishing may be restricted by Iberá National Park regulations.

Can I add a fishing day to an existing stay?

Yes. Fishing is available as an add-on at an additional charge for guests with a confirmed stay at El Tránsito, subject to guide and boat availability on the requested date. We recommend confirming well in advance, especially during peak season (October–January). Enquire at our contact page.

What type of boat is used for the fishing days?

Fishing days are conducted on Tracker Calchaquí 620 boats, bow-riders with a maximum capacity of 2 anglers plus the guide. The route covers approximately 16 km through the lagoons and channels of Iberá National Park. All boats carry safety equipment and a first aid kit on board.

Who can take part in fishing at El Tránsito?

Sport fishing at El Tránsito is open to guests aged 13 and over. No previous experience is required. We recommend comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses or eye protection (eye covering is mandatory for safety when casting).

What happens if there's a storm on the day of the fishing trip?

In the event of adverse weather conditions (heavy rain, electrical storms or other factors that prevent the activity from being carried out safely), the day is cancelled and rescheduled subject to availability, at no additional cost to the guest. The safety of the anglers and the guide is the absolute priority.

How do I get to El Tránsito to fish in Iberá?

El Tránsito is located at the Carambola Portal of Iberá National Park, Corrientes. The most common access is by flight to Corrientes (CNQ) or Resistencia (RES), with a land transfer coordinated by the lodge. The Iberá Dorado Experience package includes this transfer. See full directions at our getting here page.

What fishing methods are available in Iberá?

Two methods are available at El Tránsito: Bait Cast (equipment included: rod, reel and lures) and Fly Cast (angler's own equipment; the guides advise on the ideal setup). Both are catch & release, without live bait, using artificial lures only. The golden dorado of Iberá responds particularly well to surface lures.
