El Tránsito —
Nature Luxury Lodge
"A moving watercolour." Francisco Madariaga, on the Iberá Wetlands
More than a century on this land
1921 · Early 2000s · 2018
In 1921, when the Iberá wetlands were still a remote frontier of Corrientes province, someone chose this land to build an estancia. For decades it operated as a traditional cattle ranch, shaping the landscape and the identity of the place. With time, the buildings fell into abandonment: rotting timber, rusted water tanks, more than thirty years without maintenance.
In the early 2000s, Kris and Douglas Tompkins acquired the property through their conservation organisation as part of their project in the Iberá Wetlands. What they found was, literally, a ruin. What they built over four continuous years was something else entirely: the complete restoration of the historic homestead, 100 kilometres of perimeter fencing to protect the wetlands, the removal of invasive eucalyptus plantations and an organic cattle model designed to prove that production and conservation could coexist.
"Restoring El Tránsito required an enormous amount of work." — Tompkins Conservation
In 2018, Más Iberá S.A. acquired the property and completed the transformation: the conservation cattle ranch became a luxury nature lodge. The same structures restored by the Tompkins now form the rooms, restaurant and communal spaces of the lodge. Nothing was demolished. Everything was reimagined.

You sleep inside one of the most ambitious rewilding projects in South America.
Iberá National Park was established in 2018 across 183,000 hectares of former cattle ranches donated to the Argentine state for conservation. El Tránsito is part of that territory.
At the Carambola Portal, Fundación Rewilding Argentina actively coordinates the reintroduction of the giant anteater and the collared peccary. Across the wider National Park ecosystem, ten species have active reintroduction programmes — among them the jaguar, the largest feline in the Americas, which returned to reproduce in the wild in Corrientes after decades of regional extinction. BBC Travel described this story as Argentina's answer to the return of the wolf to Yellowstone.
Staying at El Tránsito is not just observing nature. It is sleeping inside its recovery.
